He was born in San Jose, CA to Oscar and Kerry Martinez. He received a degree in Economics from University of San Francisco, and he continued to live in San Francisco until the time of his death. Erik is survived by his parents and four sisters, Lisa Martinez, Sarah-Anne Henson, Dana Martinez and Laura Martinez and eight nieces and nephews.
Erik Charles was not a person you would forget. Not at any age or any time in his life. He was not someone you overlooked in a crowd. Standing just shy of 6ft, his charisma was all his own, making him seem 10 feet tall at times. To be in Erik’s company meant to be on a grand adventure, whether it was traversing through a grocery store or trailing behind him on the streets of San Francisco. He explored the world. He was generous with his time, astute in his observations and wise in the moments that mattered.
Erik had many talents, cooking being just one that his family loved. He made popcorn on the stove like it was Christmas every night, and we were going to need pots and pots full of it, to string for the tree. In the kitchen, his timing was impeccable and led to delicious memories. He enjoyed food, and people gathering to share a meal. In this way, Erik understood the importance of being together. The way he danced, with no inhibitions, made any family gathering unforgettable. Along with dance moves, only he could invent, was his original sense of humor.
Erik was the best person to have coffee with. A gifted conversationalist, he could strike up a conversation with almost anyone. He was also a gifted artist, with a keen eye for beauty and ability to capture its essence. He enjoyed taking pictures on long walks, playing tennis, swimming and music. As a young child, Erik would belt out medleys like he was on a Broadway stage. His theatrical renditions of certain Disney songs are among his most memorable qualities, according to his young nieces and sisters alike. The first role he was ever cast in was, Christopher Robin, in his kindergarten production of Winnie the Pooh. In blue shorts and white collared shirt. His smile so bright. It will forever shine in our hearts...
“Pooh, promise you won’t forget about me, ever. Not even when I’m a hundred.”
Pooh thought for a little.
“How old shall I be then?”
“Ninety-nine.”
Pooh nodded.
“I promise,” he said.
Still with his eyes on the world Christopher Robin put out a hand and felt for Pooh’s paw.
We will always keep a hand out for you, until we reach heaven.
